Begebe Dich zusammen mit Mika auf die Reise durch eine etwas merkwürdige Unterwasserwelt

Mika starts looking for the yogurt cup that disappeared in the garbage can and finds oneself in a strange underwater world. There the child uncovers some problems caused by plastic in the sea and starts to help the sea creatures. In the end, it becomes clear: helping is good - less plastic in the ocean is better! Please note that the book is only available in German so far.

Which age should the readers have?

The book suits kids from age 4 to 9. It mostly pictures and works well as reading book for young kids. We recommend it from age 4 because of the complexity of the story. Older children could already try to read it by themselves. It’s more fun to read it together, of course!

How long does it take to read the book?
image/svg+xml

The book has 48 pages with pictures and text. But it’s not a classic picture book: It takes about 10 minutes to read it fastly, but you’ll surely make time to take a closer looks to the illustrations. That’s why it has the perfect length for a good night story.

Where can I buy the book?

You can only buy it online at the moment. We are working on selling it in the book stores, too! Stay tuned.

Who wrote the book?
image/svg+xml

The author works for GOT BAG in Germany. She wrote and drew the book as an university project for and with us. We love Mika and the story and hope you and the kids do, too!

Is the book recycled?

The paper used is FSC and Cradle to Cradle certified. This means that the wood used comes from sustainable and environmentally friendly forest management, is tested free of harmful substances and thus meets the highest ecological standard. All substances used can be returned to the biological cycle without hesitation - without residues.

Is the main character a girl or a boy?
image/svg+xml

Pronouns are avoided in the text in order not to assign a binary gender to Mika. The child's gender therefore remains open - and we believe that it should not matter either.

Why should we bother kids with the topic of ocean plastic?
image/svg+xml

Our oceans are full of trash. It won’t disappear, not even in the generation of our children, if we don’t take action. In Germany we say: The earlier, the better! The book tells the consequences of plastic trash in the oceans child friendly with an imaginative story. It’s a first step towards the topic while being nice and motivating.

Is it a good read for school classes?
image/svg+xml

Yes, the book was developed with educational support and is well suited for discussions in bigger groups of children. As the story is both exciting and inspiring it’s a good entry for the subject of ocean plastic or plastic and trash in general.

How we turn trash into treasure

1
A network of 1,500 fishermen on the north shore of Indonesia collects ocean plastic as by-catch. The plastic is cleaned and sorted before processed.
2
After cleaning, the PET portion is pressed into pellets. The other types of plastic collected by the fishermen are fed into suitable recycling solutions.
3
The pellets are shipped to our production facility in China, where we turn them into a robust yarn and ultimately into a polyester fabric. To make our products waterproof, we are using an innovative, environmentally friendly polyurethane coating.
4
To keep our CO2 footprint as low as possible, we choose trains to Europe and ships to the US as our means of transport. Additionally, we are currently working on a climate neutral shipping option across Europe.

Recycling of ocean plastic

By using recycled PET, we made the commitment to utilize an eco-friendly alternative to new plastic in our yarn production. One metric ton of recycled PET saves 3.8 barrels of oil, 1.700 litres of water, and reduces the CO2 emission by 139 tons compared to the industry standard. So far, we were able to recycle more than 100 tons of ocean plastic.

Sociological & ecological values

Providing environmentally and socially compatible products is not enough for us. We also organize training sessions on waste separation for the local community on Java, to create a collective awareness about plastic pollution. GOT BAG also helps to support the establishment of a waste infrastructure in rural areas. In the long term, we hope to persuade the local government to rethink the way it operates Indonesia’s waste management system.

Innovative BIO-PU coating

Sustainable down to the last fiber! The fabric of every GOT BAG is water-repellent thanks to an innovative BIO-PU coating, which uses significantly less water and oil during production, while also emitting less CO2 than traditional coating processes. All of our products are free from PFC.

The Got Bag Cycle

With our GOT BAG CYCLE, we decided to rely on a sustainable life cycle approach guided by nature.

We recycle plastic waste to manufacture premium yarns, which we ultimately use to sew our long-lasting products. Every single GOT BAG product is of the highest quality and durable. If you still encounter problems with one of our products, or if the product gets damaged, we offer you a repair service. If we exchange your GOT BAG, we will re-recycle the material for our next production line to make sure that the plastic will never end up in our oceans again.
